On May 4, 2017, AFOR organized the workshop "Installing Fiber Optic Cables in Romania", at the fiber optic factory Prysmian, in Slatina.

1st Workshop: "Installing Fiber Optic Cables in Romania"

- AFOR and 5 of its members: Prysmian, Teleprecision-MTS, Netcity Telecom, Duraline, R&M;

- 6 telecom operators: RCS&RDS, Telekom Romania, Vodafone, GTS Telecom, Euroweb, Teletrans;

- 2 operators of power distribution networks: ENEL and Electrica Distribution Muntenia North.


There have been many problems encountered in the practice of installing fiber optic cables, such as: wrong handling of cables, misallocation of reserves, wrong grip on the poles etc.

There were listed the important parameters for an installation of fiber optic cables:

  •  Maximum pulling force, Tensile Test: 1000-1200 N for cables to be installed in pipelines, 2500-3000 N for ADSS and 4500-6000 N for reinforced cables;
  • Bend radius: typically 20x cable diameter (after installation) and 40x cable diameter (during installation);
  • Installation temperature: >0 ºC for PVC jacket cables and >-15 ºC for PE cables. The usual threshold temperature in Romania, of -5 ºC is recommended due to the fusion splicing of fiber optic cables, more than for the installation of fiber optic cables;
  • Cable routing installed on poles. Is it calculated and provided by designers and on average is 1% for OPGW and 3% for ADSS;
  • Micro-curves greatly affect the quality of transmission on fiber optics. Particularly lately, when most passes on DWDM, CD (chromatic dispersion) and PMD, measurements are required ,and reserves or other fiber optic curves in fusion splicer boxes can dramatically affect the CD and transmission attenuation on fiber optics.
  • Cable supplies: - in non-fusion splicer rooms:5-6 m

                                 - in rooms with fusion splicer: 15+15 m

                                 - aerial without fusion splicer: 40 m

                                 - aerial with fusion splicer: 20 m

                                 - at OPGW: 30-40 m (only at fusion splicers)

  •  Burying depth- see the standard made by AFOR SR 13558: 2014. It is recommended to complete with an action through MDRAP to become mandatory and not just a recommendation, as any standard.

The following aspects are important for receiving/checking the installation of fiber optic cables through tubes:

  • check tube (continuity tests with sponge or bullet)
  • cable bending radii (visual and OTDR measurements at 1625mm)
  • the presence of water in the fusion splicer boxes
  • in the installation of fiber optic cables, operators major problems are related to administrative problems: 

           - absence or inability to obtain the authorization ( especially for maintenance works)

           - owners agreement in blocks/buildings/homes

           - complaints from owner association

           - the work of other previous operators that caused problems and the tenats are no longer allowing access to other operators.


The following workshop will be attended by representatives from MDRAP and ASRO.

Specialty working groups will be created to make working papers, guides to good practice, useful for designers, installers,etc. to all participants in theirs activities.

 The next two workshops will take place in the same location in Slatina, starting at 10 am:
